Glantz Family History
Glantz Family History is updated from the August 15, 1982 "Our Family Reunion" brochure, for which Mary Catherine Glantz Seibel is largely responsible. Revisions have been made July 22, 1989 and August 17, 1996.
The original spelling of the name was Glanz, but due to confusion with another family of the same name, our great-grandfather, August Glantz, changed it to the present day Glantz.

Great Grandfather August Glantz was born in Pomerania, West Prussia (Germany) in 1840 and died in 1885 in North Tonawanda, New York. He married Caroline Hartman who was born November 2, 1836 in Vierech, Germany. Caroline was a widower, first married to a man named Heil. August and Caroline had 7 children, 3 of whom died due to diphtheria. Caroline died around 1913.
August Glantz: Born September 19, 1868 in Pasewalk, Pomerania, West Prussia (Germany). He married Mathilda Speich, (born April 7, 1870 near Strasbourg, France) in 1891. They had one child, Bertha Mathilda. Mathilda Speich Glantz died January 25, 1911.
Bertha Glantz: Born February 2, 1870, married Joshua Splane. They had no children. Bertha died in 1915.
John Glantz: Married Barbara Hoerstig (born December 16, 1857) on November 2, 1902. John was killed by a train while living in North Tonawanda, NY in 1913. Barbara died on August 3, 1957. They had no children.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Glantz: Married Stephen Hoerstig in 1902. They had two sons, Lawrence and Stephen. Stephen Sr. died before young Stephen was born. She then married Hugh Burns in 1906. They had six children: Caroline, Bertha, Mildred, Regis, John and Hugh Jr..
When Great Grandfather August Glantz brought his family from Germany to America, he settled with relatives on their farm in North Tonawanda, New York. He and his son August built a frame house on the back of cousin Lizzie Cherry's lot on Adams street. Supposedly the house is still there.
Grandfather August Glantz moved to Pittsburgh in the early 1890's, and went to work for the Chataqua Ice Company driving an ice wagon. The company merged with Consolidated Ice Company (largest firm in the city). August had one child, Bertha Mathilda, by his first wife. After the death of his first wife, August married Catherine Schwab on November 27, 1911.
August and Catherine had six children of whom four survived: Mary (died in infancy), Francis (Father Louis), John, twins Gertrude Ann (also died young) and Mary Catherine, and Paul.
August worked his way up and was promoted to the position of Superintendent of the Northern Division until he resigned to take over the Klein Saloon business at 1106 Franklin Street on the North Side of Pittsburgh. Prohibition came in and thus the beginning of the end of his business. The family then moved to 1716 Manhattan Street. August Glantz died on January 16, 1937. His wife Catherine died three weeks later on February 5, 1937. They are buried in the Glantz family plot at the North Side Cemetery in West View.
The seven children and offspring of August Glantz are:
1) Bertha Mathilda Glantz Clark: Born June 29, 1901. She married Allan Gilmour Clark (born November 25, 1896 in Ayrshire Scotland) on April 3, 1920. They had four children: Allan Sr. (died February 6, 1979 in Sun City, Arizona). Their children are:
Allan Jr. and his wife Ann have one son, Allan (born 1954)
John Thomas and his wife Diane have four children: Sue (born 1953), Sherri (born 1956), Scott (born 1957), and Thomas John (born 1960). All live in California.
Donald Woodburn and his wife Roswitha have four children: Karen (1962), Andrew (1963), David (1968) and Paul (1972). They also live in California.
Margaret Jean and her husband Edward Campbell have one son, Christopher (1973). They live in Europe.

3) Father Louis Glantz, O.M.Cap.: Born Francis Glantz, December 27, 1913. He studied at St. Fidelis Seminary for the priesthood and professed August 25, 1938. He was ordained June 10, 1940. Father Louis was a professor at St. Fidelis Seminary and then Superior of Capuchin College, Washington. He was then sent to Cumberland, Md. as pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Church. His last positions were heading two dioceses institutions: Auberle Memorial Home in McKeesport in 1953 and Toner Institute in Brookline, 1958. He died on May 23, 1959 at the age of 45, and is laid to rest in the Capuchin plot at St. Augustine Cemetery.
4) John Glantz: Born May 18, 1915, and married Marie Eva Booker (born September 15, 1917) in St. Josephs Church on September 2, 1937. John attended St. Joseph's Catholic school on the North Side for 8 years, and then went to David B. Oliver High on Brighton Road where he graduated on June 1, 1932. John was employed at Allis Chalmers plant on the North Side as a pattern maker; later he transferred to their plant in Gadsen, Alabama. He was promoted to the position of Time Study Expert until he retired with 45 years of service with the company. He lived in Hixton, Tennessee, where he worked with his son Bob as Business Manager in Bob's Computer Maintenance Company, until his untimely death May 17, 1988. John and Marie's four children are:
Robert and Carol (Streiner) Glantz have six children: Terry, Linda, Tom, John, Lizz Ann, and Patrick. They live in Tennessee.
James Albert (b. 8-26-40) married Kathleen Patricia "Pat" Fairall (b. 11-26-44) on January 11, 1969. They have one son, William "Billy" Anthony (b. 11-18-63), who lives on Castle Shannon Blvd. in Mount Lebanon. Billy married Elizabeth Ann Puzzini (b. 8-18-63) on September 12, 1987. They have two sons, William Anthony Jr. (b. 9-21-88) and James Caleb (7-16-92).
William C. (b. 5-13-42) and Dorthy J. (Smith) were married on July 22, 1961 and have two children: William (b. 3-10-66) and Christine (b. 8-16-68). Bill married Rietta Annie (Logsden) on October 8, 1988 and they live in Crafton, PA. Their child Katrina Ann Glantz was born 1-3-96. Christine's child Shannon Marie Glantz was born 4-25-90.
Charles "Chuck" and Joyce (Nutter) Glantz had one child, Evie. Charles was born on April 11, 1945 and died on October 5, 1984. He is buried in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Greensburg, PA. Joyce remarried (Thompson) and lives in Tyrone, PA with her husband and Evie. Charles (Chuck) Bernard Glantz and Marianne Kegris had one son, John Richard Glantz, born February 5 1966 in Etowah county Gadsden, Alabama. John spent two summers with Chuck and Joyce before Chuck passed away. John was raised by Marianne's parents, Richard H. Kegris and Ingeborg H. Kegris from about the age of one. John married Angélique Hubertina Petra (Smeets) Glantz (born May 22, 1968, Wijlre, The Netherlands) on July 20, 1990 in Gulpen, The Netherlands.
5) Gertrude Ann - died young (Mary Catherine's twin)
6) Mary Catherine Glantz (b. March 19, 1919/ d. 11-22-1992) married Calvin Seibel on September 7, 1937. They had six children: Barbara, Janet, Francis, Calvin, Edwin and Michael. Mary Catherine is buried in North Catholic Cemetary in the North Side.
Barbara Ann Seibel married Melvin Houck and they now live in Severna Park, Maryland where Melvin was transferred with Westinghouse. They have four children: Bennett, Brian, Twins Chrisie and Randy.
Bennett passed away on October 10, 1986 in John Hopkins Hospital in Maryland.
Brian, a Plum High School graduate, joined the US Marine Corp. and was in the Motor Transport Battalion, and studied as a heavy equipment driver until his discharge. Brian is currently employed from as Foreman at Renkert Terminals located in the harbor of Baltimore. He is currently unmarried and living in Maryland.
Chrisie is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where she attended on a full scholarship in the athletic volley ball field. Christine recently graduated from UCLA School of Radiology, passed her State test and is anticipating the National test this summer. Chris is currently living in Santa Monica, CA.
Randy married Pam Biden in August 1992, they have 3 daughters, Amanda Biden Houck, age 16, Melissa Biden Houck, age 12 and Sarah Ashley Houck, age 2. They currently reside in Severn, MD. Randy works for the government as an aircraft climate control specialist, Pam is a counselor for the mentally handicapped.
Janet Mary Seibel married Carmen Shullo and have one son, Michael, and live in Oakwood, PA. Carmen retired in 1992 after 36 years with the Joseph B. Fay Co.. Janet works for Robert W. Hunt Co. in Pittsburgh. Their son Michael is a graduate of Canevin Catholic High and of the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland, with a Pharmacy degree in May of 1995. Michael is presently working towards his PhD in Pharmacy at Pitt.
Francis Paul Seibel married Beth Conway, and they have two children: Karin and Dale. They live in Coraopolis. Karin is a graduate of Moon Senior High and the Ohio Valley School of Nursing. She is a nurse in the Trauma Center of Mercy Hospital. Dale is also a graduate of Moon Senior High, and will attend Lock Haven on a partial athletic (football) scholarship in the fall.
Calvin Richard Seibel married Pam Burns, and they have three children: Daniel (1984), David (1986) and Caitlan (1988). They live in Washington County, Amity, PA.
Edwin August Seibel (b. 12-25-1948/ d. 7-23-1995) married JoAnn Caldrone, and they have three children: Eric (1978), Marlana (1980) and Matthew (1986). Eddie's family lives in Mount Washington. Eddie is buried in Calvary Cemetary near Homestead.
Michael John Seibel married Sally McGraw, and they have two children: Lauren (1984) and Katie (1985). They live in Baldwin.
7) Paul Joseph Glantz (b. 1-31, 1921/ d. 3-4-80) married Norma Mae Workman on November 26, 1942 in St. Andrews Church in the North Side. Paul retired Professor Emeritus from Penn State University in September 1979, and died on March 4, 1980. He is laid to rest in Grey's Cemetery, Route 550 near Stormstown, PA. [Norma Mae married Bob Olsen on February 25, 1989, and they live in State College.] Paul and Norma had seven children: Katherine, Paul Joseph Jr., John Edward, Louis Thomas, Thomas Augustus, Edward Joseph and Francis Walter (Frank).
Kathy married Walter Grube on November 28, 1964. They have six children: Walter (1970), Thomas (1972), John (1975), Mary Frances (1977), Norma Catherine (1980), and Paul (1982). They live in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Paul Jr. married Linda (Ulrich) Glantz and have three children: Rusty (1977), Andy (1980) and Rachael (1984).
John married Nance Schwartz Davidson, a childhood sweetheart. He has two children from a previous marriage to Roberta Heyler: Joshua (1978) and Robert (1980). They live in Saxton.
Louis married Ava Long on November 24, 1971. They live in Port Matilda with three children: Brennan (1972), and twins Jani and Joli (1983).
Tom (b. 3-24-53/ d. 2-27-96) was an executive in business logistics for Panasonic. He died of cancer in his home in Miami Beach, Florida in 1996.
Ed married Lisa Weaver on July 22, 1983. They live in Port Matilda with three children: Candace (1984), Justin (1988) and Kirsten (1992).
Frank (Francis Walter) is married to Melissa Brower and lives in State College. He is divorced from Julie Gosselin (married on September 5, 1983), with whom they had four children: Michael (1984), Nicolas (1987), Bryan (1988) and David (1991).

Joanes Schwab, our great-grandfather, was born in Phillig, Preusseu. He married Eva Schwind (born August 31, 1854 in Kailberg, Bavaria) on April 12, 1875 in St. Joseph's Church, 1250 Liverpool Street, North Side. They had five children:
Catherine was born October 12 1877, and died February 5, 1937. Joseph was born December 8, 1881 and died September 21, 1954.
Honess (German for John)
Peter was born August 24, 1886 and died March 27, 1966.
Agnes was born April 16, 1891 and died January 7, 1959.
August was born November 22, 1893 and died June 10, 1961.
Joanes had a hauling business which was located in the back of his home at 1415 Adams Street. Together with his two sons, Honess and Pete, he hauled for the American Locomotive Works among others. They were members of St. Joseph's Church and the children attended St. Joseph's School. Eva Schwab died December 23, 1916, and is buried in the Schwab family plot in North Side Catholic Cemetery in West View. The children of Joanes and Eva Schwab are:
Catherine married August Glantz on November 27, 1911. They had six children: Mary, Francis, John, twins Getrude Ann and Mary Catherine, and Paul.
Joseph and wife Mary had one son, Joseph.
Agnes never married.
August never married.
Honess never married.
Pete married Mary Fichter (born April 12, 1988). Mary died January 9, 1950. They had five children:
John Charles married Edna Redeher. They have one son, August, who married Lorina Krause. They have four children: Elizabeth, Cynthia, Christopher and Charles. August and Lorina live in Gettysburg. John Charles died on October 6, 1975.
Augustine (Gustine) died at an early age.
Edward married Gertrude Blackstock, and have two children: Gertrude and Eileen. Gertrude is married to Ray Houch, and they have four children: Edward, Billy, Tom, and James. Eileen is married to Jerry Brown, and they have one child, Brian. Edward died on December 20, 1979.
Louis married Mildred Lucy and they had five children: Mildred Carol, Louis, Danny, Tom and Joseph. Two of their children are married. Mildred Carol married Mike Neibauer, and had four children: Don, Daniel, Allison, and Tracy. Louis married Sandy Rudolph. They have one child, Susan.
Phillip (Bud) married Dot English, divorced, and later married Shirley Weier.

Joanes had a hauling business which was located in the back of his home at 1415 Adams Street. Together with his two sons, Honess and Pete, he hauled for the American Locomotive Works among others. They were members of St. Joseph's Church and the children attended St. Joseph's School. Eva Schwab died December 23, 1916, and is buried in the Schwab family plot in North Side Catholic Cemetery in West View. The children of Joanes and Eva Schwab are:
Catherine married August Glantz on November 27, 1911. They had six children: Mary, Francis, John, twins Getrude Ann and Mary Catherine, and Paul.
Joseph and wife Mary had one son, Joseph.
Agnes never married.
August never married.
Honess never married.
Pete married Mary Fichter (born April 12, 1988). Mary died January 9, 1950. They had five children:
John Charles married Edna Redeher. They have one son, August, who married Lorina Krause. They have four children: Elizabeth, Cynthia, Christopher and Charles. August and Lorina live in Gettysburg. John Charles died on October 6, 1975.
Augustine (Gustine) died at an early age.
Edward married Gertrude Blackstock, and have two children: Gertrude and Eileen. Gertrude is married to Ray Houch, and they have four children: Edward, Billy, Tom, and James. Eileen is married to Jerry Brown, and they have one child, Brian. Edward died on December 20, 1979.
Louis married Mildred Lucy and they had five children: Mildred Carol, Louis, Danny, Tom and Joseph. Two of their children are married. Mildred Carol married Mike Neibauer, and had four children: Don, Daniel, Allison, and Tracy. Louis married Sandy Rudolph. They have one child, Susan.
Phillip (Bud) married Dot English, divorced, and later married Shirley Weier.

Prior to WW I, the Czech Republic was referred to as Austria-Hungary. Josefa arrive in New York on 05 June 1883 on the S.S. Main operated by Norddeutscher ("North German") Loyd.

"The North German Lloyd's Royal Mail Steamers depart from Bremen to New York and Baltimore twice a week, taking passengers from Christiania weekly until the middle of March, when the regular twice a week service from Christiania starts. Departure from Christiania Saturday 13th this month via Hamburg and Bremen and Friday 19th this month via Hull and Southampton. The North German Lloyd steamers do not have Irish passengers on board. O. Svenson, General agent for the North German Lloyd, Christiania."
